Directive (EC) N° 94/62 on packaging and packaging waste
A Deposit Return Scheme for drink containers (DRS) introduces a deposit on single-use drinks containers, which is refunded upon return of the empty container. The deposit provides a financial incentive for consumers to return empty drinks containers for recycling. The DRS in England and Northern Ireland will include single-use drinks containers up to 3 litres. In England and Northern Ireland, materials included are polyethylene terephthalate (PET) plastic bottles, steel and aluminium cans.

8. A Deposit Return Scheme for drinks containers (DRS) introduces a deposit on single-use drinks containers, which is refunded upon return of the empty container.

9. Current recycling rates in the UK for drinks containers (70%) are lower than other countries that have a Deposit Return Scheme (DRS), leaving approximately 4 billion plastic bottles and 2.7 billion cans that are not recycled every year, ending up in litter, landfill or incineration and creating pollution and a demand for virgin materials. A well-designed DRS could achieve recycling rates of 90% or higher.
