5. Federal Act amending the Waste Management Act 2002 (AWG-Novelle Kreislaufwirtschaftspaket)
6. All types of packaging are affected. The products addressed include single-use plastic food packaging for immediate consumption and single-use cups for beverages, as well as single-use aluminium cans for beverages and single-use plastic beverage bottles.

8. The legislative amendment transposes requirements from Directive (EU) 2019/904 into national law, specifically updating the Waste Management Act 2002, concerning packaging.
In addition, requirements from the amended Directive 2008/98/EC are being transposed in relation to the extended producer responsibility regime for packaging.
Furthermore, some updates, adjustments and changes are being made to simplify and improve enforcement.
9. On 2 July 2019, Directive (EU) 2019/904 on the reduction of the impact of certain plastic products on the environment (Directive (EU) 2019/904) came into force. The aim of the Directive is to reduce plastic waste generation in order to prevent and reduce the impact of plastic waste on the environment, especially on the marine environment. This Directive affects single-use plastic products most frequently found on European beaches, fishing gear containing plastic and oxo-degradable plastic. Various measures are envisaged for the various groups of plastic products, such as reduced consumption, prohibitions and extended producer responsibility.
Directive (EU) 2018/851 amending Directive 2008/98/EC on waste entered into force on 4 July 2018. Among other things, it lays down in Article 8a, various additional provisions regarding extended producer responsibility. The aim of the draft Act is to transpose into Austrian law various requirements arising from Directive (EU) 2019/904 as well as the requirements arising from Article 8a of the amended Directive 2008/98/EC, in particular concerning packaging.
In addition, measures are envisaged to reduce single-use plastic packaging (power to issue ordinances) and on the framework conditions and specific targets for the expansion of reusable beverage packaging systems (percentage of reusable packaging in the food retail).
