5. Order regarding the requirement for economic operators to inform consumers about the surface treatment of fruit and vegetables with pesticides

8. This Order establishes the conditions that economic operators must meet in order to ensure that consumers are correctly, fully and precisely informed about the surface treatment of fruit and vegetables with pesticides.
Economic operators shall be required to inform consumers, by means of clearly visible labelling, of the fact that the fruit and vegetables being placed on the market have been surface treated with pesticides and to provide clear information regarding the correct way to handle/use the products, mentioning where necessary that consumption of the skins of the products in question should be avoided.
Operators shall provide this consumer information by displaying the plate provided for in the Annex to the Order immediately next to the fruit and vegetables, on the shelf in the premises in which they are marketed.
The inscription on the plate must be written in Tahoma font, size 16.
9. The draft is intended to ensure that consumers in Romania are better informed regarding the treatment of the fruit and vegetables offered to them, as well as the fact that these products will not impact their lives or their health and the fact that certain pesticides can cause cancer.
Moreover, inspections by the staff of the National Authority for Consumer Protection (ANPC) have revealed that food products are being marketed which have been treated with products that may be harmful to health if improperly used.
At the same time, ANPC inspections have shown that many economic operators fail to inform consumers correctly, fully and precisely regarding the products being offered, thereby potentially misleading them.
Given the role of the ANPC in oversight and inspection and in ensuring that consumers are correctly informed, we feel that this legislation is necessary for consumer protection (natural persons).
